The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the Minnis administration’s work to implement the Freedom of Information Act:
“Despite the last administration working to tear down efforts to increase transparency in Government, the Minnis administration is advancing the process to implement the Freedom of Information Act (FOI). It is a promise made and a promise kept by this FNM Government.
“The announcement of the first Freedom of Information commissioner and deputy commissioner is historic for our country. It further demonstrates the FNM’s commitment to transparency, democracy and accountability.
“Our party’s record of transparency stands in stark contrast to that of the PLP. During the PLP’s last term in office corruption was turned into an art form. The focus of their administration was self-enrichment and covering up scandals. The PLP could not account for how it spent VAT revenue or Hurricane Matthew relief funds. Even now in opposition the PLP can’t explain its tangled relationship with the party’s indicted chief benefactor, billionaire Peter Nygard.
“By contrast the Minnis administration has shown, despite back-to-back historic crises, that it is determined to continue fulfilling its commitments to the Bahamian people to move the country forward. A new landfill in New Providence, free education for qualifying students, tax relief in economic empowerment zones, long overdue upgrades at BPL, and improving infrastructure on the Family Islands are but a few of the commitments the FNM is delivering on, along with advancing the Freedom of Information process.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis our Government will continue delivering because we know the people deserve nothing less from their elected leaders.”
