The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the PLP ratifying a number of former, unsuccessful candidates:
“As we have been saying for years, what’s old is new again for the woeful PLP, as it ratified a number of former candidates. The country is working to move forward under this FNM Government. However, the PLP’s slogan seems to be ‘let us drag you back to the past’, where politicians were focused on elevating themselves at the people’s expense.
“It’s almost sad that having been swept from power in historic fashion three years ago, Philip Brave Davis and his party learned little to nothing from their resounding defeat. The people were clear last election, but Davis continues to ignore them. Just as stunning is the fact that of the former candidates the PLP ratified last night, all but one lost by double digits in the 2017 election. This was an election in which Bahamians rejected the archaic, corrupt and incompetent PLP.
“From the former minister of state for finance to the former attorney general, the woeful PLP seems to have no interest in replacing the politicians from the past. This is a party that set records for incompetence and corruption while taking advantage of taxpayers in its last term in office.
“From rampant crime, to five years of zero or negative economic growth, and raging deficits, the PLP showed how inept it was in Government. Yet, Davis seems to be getting the old gang back together again.
“Even worse was their allegiance to Peter Nygard, the party’s chief benefactor. Prosecutors have him sitting in jail today because of his alleged unconscionable crimes against young women around the world, including some in The Bahamas.
“Nygard was the PLP’s chief donor. No distortions or temper tantrums, as Davis recently expressed, could separate him or the PLP from the factual evidence connecting them to Nygard.
“While Davis talks about recruiting new, progressive candidates one day, he takes the opposite approach the next, going with the same old and tired party loyalists who put politics before the people. The people have spoken before about Davis’ team. They will again. As the country has started moving forward, it’s clear Davis and the woeful PLP have not.”
