The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the PLP’s continued stonewalling on the party’s disturbing connections to Peter Nygard:
“Last week’s ‘Peter Nygard: The Secret Videos’ special documentary by the CBC further demonstrated the disturbingly close relationship of the PLP’s upper echelon and their chief benefactor Peter Nygard. The extent of Nygard’s hold on the party’s elites revealed in the CBC special was breathtaking, lending credence to reports that Nygard felt and acted above the law because his ties to the PLP Government shielded him.
“From former Prime Minister Perry Christie’s glowing remarks at the wedding of Nygard’s daughter – where he stated he was proud to have helped Nygard gain Bahamian residency – to the heartbreaking stories of alleged victims, it is becoming clearer that the PLP must address all these lingering questions about its ties to Nygard.
“In a recent New York Post article, Peter Nygard’s own son called his father ‘a monster’ and said his father thought he was above the law. The CBC documentary showed in disturbing detail how Nygard targeted young Bahamian women, and even girls as young as 13 years old. Several of the alleged victims interviewed explained the difficulty of stepping forward with allegations because, as one stated, ‘Nygard knew where the girls lived, and they [victims] were intimidated or paid off to disappear’.
“As more of the disturbing details come to light it’s appalling that Philip Brave Davis refuses to address the fact that he was one of Nygard’s confidants in the party. Bahamians want to know how deep are Nygard’s ties to Davis and his PLP? In the past, Nygard infused their campaigns with millions in donations. Did he do the same in 2017, and have they taken any money from Nygard since the last election? Any of that money now potentially in PLP coffers is better directed to helping the Bahamian females who say he assaulted them.
“It is time for Davis to break his silence. Bahamians and all the women who have made claims against Nygard deserve better from their elected leaders.”
