The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding Brave Davis and his PLP’s latest attack on the Prime Minister:
“Brave Davis is seemingly becoming more unhinged since his return from fleeing The Bahamas for coronavirus treatment in the United States. His fleeing our country sent the wrong message then and he sends the wrong message to this day.
“Davis again turned a deaf ear to the hopeful, yet cautious, message from Prime Minister Minnis last night. In his address our leader announced the extension of vital unemployment and food assistance programs for struggling Bahamians. The truth is the Prime Minister’s leadership is getting results. No one likes the restrictions, including the Prime Minister, but as a doctor and our country’s leader he knows he’s responsible for saving lives. That has been a driving force since this pandemic began.
“The steps taken under his leadership these past weeks helped contain the spread of the virus. But far be it from declaring victory or celebrating, the Minnis Administration continues to preach caution and safety as we see encouraging economic signs such as resorts re-opening.
“Having grown up Over the Hill, our Prime Minister recognizes all is not back to normal. His Government continues to help as people struggle. As he announced last night, the extended unemployment program has benefited 36,959 Bahamians whose benefits ended after the customary 13 weeks, or who otherwise would not have qualified for such benefits. The food assistance program has helped more than 100,000 Bahamians. The announced extension of both initiatives show the Prime Minister understands the hardship so many Bahamians continue to face due to the pandemic even as we loosen restrictions in the near term.
“Regardless of Davis’ nonsensical comments, this administration is working to meet the challenges facing our country. It seeks to get the economy up and running again in a safe, responsible and sustainable fashion.”
