The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement regarding the Prime Minister’s plan to tackle COVID-19 and Chester Cooper’s irresponsible criticisms:
“As COVID-19 cases began to spike last week in Exuma and Grand Bahama, our Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, wasted no time implementing new restrictions and measures to help contain the spread. But one of the PLP’s lead mouthpieces, Chester Cooper, wasted no time as well in condemning the FNM. He has made it his mission to delegitimize any and every move our Government makes simply for the sake of holding an opposite position.
“Kicking and screaming from the sidelines, Cooper who is devoid of any coherent plan of his own, must believe the cure to COVID-19 lies in criticism and political rhetoric. Cooper had to completely suspend common sense when he claimed the Government’s new public health restrictions in Exuma were overreaching. It was only a day later that local business owners in Exuma corrected the woeful leadership of the PLP, explaining to the media that the measures were both expected and necessary to keep from furthering the economic impact of the pandemic.
“Leadership isn’t about getting headlines or scoring political points. As Prime Minister Minnis demonstrates, it is serving the people and making the decisions in the best interest of all Bahamians. The Prime Minister’s leadership on containment measures is proving successful, as regions that have followed these guidelines are beginning to safely reopen if they haven’t already. His leadership in delivering on relief efforts has helped to provide more than $18 million in food assistance for those most impacted by this global crisis.
“Despite Cooper and the PLP’s worn-out rhetoric, Prime Minister Minnis will stay the course – fighting to contain the spread of COVID-19, while keeping a laser focus on job growth and development projects that will bring prosperity to all Bahamians for decades to come.”
