The Free National Movement (FNM) issued the following statement in response to PLP Leader Philip Brave Davis’ comments following his meeting with public health experts:

“Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis invited the Opposition Leader and his team to a Cabinet briefing last Tuesday with local and international health experts. They declined to attend. Davis prefers politicking rather than doing the hard work of governing.

“Embarrassed after the Prime Minister noted Wednesday in the House of Assembly that he did not attend the Tuesday meeting, Davis finally decided to meet with the health representatives.

“Instead of taking in the briefing and responding with national concern like a true leader, Davis reverted to his usual uninformed, clueless partisan attacks. Sadly, this time his ramblings amounted to a condemnation of the efforts of our fine healthcare professionals.

“According to Davis, nothing has gone right with the response of the Bahamian healthcare system to this fight. He clearly has no faith in Bahamian healthcare professionals. Davis, who wants to lead The Bahamas, even decided to leave the country for treatment by foreign doctors when he contracted COVID-19. The PLP Leader clearly doesn’t believe in Bahamians.

“Prime Minister Minnis is a Bahamian doctor who believes in the Bahamian doctors and nurses on the frontline of this fight. He has followed the science and listened to the advice of public health experts.

“Dr. Minnis’ policies successfully carried the country through the first wave of this pandemic. And in this second wave cases are now low on most islands. With higher numbers in New Providence and Abaco, the Prime Minister has put forward measures designed to slow viral transmission while not going as far as a lockdown.

“These restrictive measures were designed only for New Providence and Abaco, while allowing greater openness in the other islands where cases are low. The Prime Minister is balancing public health concerns with the need for openness so Bahamians could make a living.

“Bahamians see Davis’ statement for what it is: delusional political rhetoric. Under the Minnis Administration testing has expanded; previous outbreaks in Grand Bahama and Bimini have been successfully reduced; and COVID-19 bed capacity has been increased.

“Davis is lost and clueless. Each time he speaks he reveals more and more that he has no capacity to govern The Bahamas. He also has no capacity to even lead the PLP. He would do better to advise his members to stop violating the COVID protocols by having rushouts and get-togethers, rather than attacking our Prime Minister who is working hard to keep Bahamians safe.”
