Free National Movement Chairman Carl Culmer Sr. issued the following statement in response to PLP Chairman Fred Mitchell’s statement on the Prime Minister:
“Fred Mitchell has no moral authority to speak when it comes to the COVID-19 rules. At the beginning of this month, Mitchell returned to The Bahamas via Grand Bahama from a prolonged stay in the United States. Our country’s COVID-19 rules require people entering The Bahamas from abroad to quarantine for 14 days. This rule exists to prevent the spread of the virus.
“Upon landing, Mitchell held a TV interview rather than going directly into quarantine. Mitchell was then out and about in Grand Bahama. Mitchell’s conduct shows he thinks he is better than the people. To the PLP Chairman there is one set of rules for regular Bahamians and another for him.
“When the media put questions to Mitchell regarding his conduct the PLP Chairman arrogantly refused to answer. This is not how a leader should act. But, I am not surprised by Mitchell’s behavior. That is how PLP leaders behave. They put power and politics before the people, and they think the rules do not apply to them.
“Mitchell’s hypocrisy on the COVID-19 rules means he should be the last one to criticize anyone on such issues. Instead, he today released a statement baselessly attacking Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis and rambling about upholding COVID-19 rules. Dr. Minnis did not attack the Leader of the Opposition. He merely noted his absence from the House of Assembly.
“Mitchell’s statement was irrational and unnecessary. It is yet another one of his useless contributions to public debate. Throughout this historic pandemic Mitchell has been unable to rise to the level of statesman. He has ranted and raved. Everyday he has some nonsensical attack on the Government. He has no ideas or solutions to offer to advance the Bahamian people.
“Mitchell is a spent political force. This is his sixth decade in politics. He represents the old guard of the PLP – a group only focused on seeking power. Our FNM Government is focused on continuing to reduce the COVID-19 numbers and opening up our economy so that Bahamians could make a living. Mitchell and the PLP want to divide the country through petty political attacks.
“We are fortunate as a country not to have Mitchell and Philip Brave Davis leading us at a time like this. Bahamians were wise to elect a doctor as their leader in 2017. Our Prime Minister has the knowledge and vision to get us through this crisis.”
