The Free National Movement issued the following statement regarding Chester Cooper’s commentary on the recent Moody’s downgrade:
“Leave it to the loquacious Chester Cooper, the woeful PLP’s lead cheerleader, to drum up an alarmist reaction to the anticipated credit downgrade, but ignore the multiple downgrades that brought our economy to the brink of collapse when his party was in power. Having no answers then and no answers now, Cooper and his PLP cohort only play is to blame the FNM regardless of how unsubstantial the claim.
“Cooper and the PLP’s pattern has always stayed the same: They work to create a political divide surrounding every action the Government takes but refuse to lift a finger to help contribute toward solutions. Cooper’s blame game goes beyond innocent exaggeration as he misleads the public.
“It is the FNM that prior to back-to-back crises achieved two years of positive growth after the woeful PLP took us through a half decade of negative or zero growth. It is the FNM that continues fighting to deliver on its promises – that is, investing and improving education, reforming Government to be more transparent and accountable, enhancing infrastructure and bringing the economy back into the hands of the Bahamian people. It is the FNM Government after Hurricane Dorian that immediately went to work to provide healthcare, housing, food and a historic reconstruction effort. After Hurricane Matthew, however, the woeful PLP did little, saw relief funds go missing and failed to formalize a complete reconstruction, though perpetually promising to.
“Chester Cooper clearly has no room to talk when it comes to the Government’s response to crises. Our Government is not only carrying out a recovery effort that covers two major crises, but it continues to provide core services and strive towards advancing on its commitments. The PLP could never have done one of these things, yet they are the first to lecture when times are tough.
“Despite Chester Cooper and the woeful PLP’s political games, our FNM Government, under the leadership of Dr. Hubert Minnis, will continue fighting to revitalize our economy and restore the lives affected by the recent crisis, because we deserve nothing less from our elected leaders.”
